Any pet owner knows that losing your furry friend is the very worst part of pet ownership. These animals become beloved members of our families and so many memories are tied to them. I know from experience that when grief strikes, photos and videos can help remind us of the good times together.
When my sweet neighbors posted that they'd made an appointment to free their elderly dog from pain, my heart broke for them. I reached out and asked if they'd like to take some end-of-life portraits and they agreed.
The purpose of sharing these photos is not to spread sadness. I am sharing Tink to honor her legacy and beautiful life. Tink may be small but she has made a large impact on the Skripkunis family. I feel so honored to be trusted to capture these meaningful last moments. My hope is that these portraits become a comfort to you on the hard days and bring joy back to your hearts.
Tinkerbell (aka Tink, Stinks Marie, Stinkerbell) is a 15 year old Shih Tzu who was described to me as "a sassy sweetheart".
Find out more about Tink and her life in my interview with Rose.
How old was she when you brought her home? I lived with my parents when they got her. She was a birthday present for my mom. We got her when she was able to leave her mom so she was an itty bitty puppy.
How did you choose her name? My mom chose it. She loves Tinkerbell.
What 3 words would you use to describe her personality? Sweet. Sassy. Nervous.
Tell me about a hard time she helped you through? When my parents died, she didn't leave my side. We did everything together.
I’m so happy to be partnering up with The Tilly Project as an affiliate photographer. The Tilly Project connects pet owners with end-of-life pet photographers across the world, and provides accessible, educational, and supportive resources for photography, anticipatory grief, and pet loss/bereavement. Saying goodbye to a four legged family member is a heartbreak that leaves a permanent hole in your heart; one that I’m all too familiar with. It is an honor and privilege to capture images that memorialize and celebrate the love between you and your ailing pet.
If you are interested in a celebration of life session with your elderly or terminally ill furry friend, you can see more about it here. Everyone deserves to have beautiful portraits of their pets and their unbreakable bond. We never know how much time we have left with our beloved animals, but I'm here for you with my camera at the ready.
